Today marks 8 years after the sudden demise of Former President John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills

Exactly 8 years ago today, at exactly 14:15 GMT, the then president of Ghana H.E John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills bade his last goodbye and joined the world of the dead.

His sudden demise was more or less like the driving of a hot knife through the hearts of many Ghanaians who did not believe the grim news and was left in utter shock and disbelief.

Prior to his passing, he had gone to the diaspora to seek medical attention and came back strong with a message to encourage Ghanaians to believe that he had fully recovered and will be resuming work as soon as the next day.

Although from the look on his face and with the difficulty he had in speech, many thought he wasn’t all well, the NDC communicators said he was well and had been healed God contrary to the purported wish of the opposition and haters to hear a piece of bad news.

After three days of celebrating his 68th birthday, John Atta-Mills died on 24th July 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital after a short undisclosed illness.

The news shook the pillars of the nation as it was the first time a seating president had died in office through a natural cause thus many put their political colours aside and wailed and cried.

The entire nation came to a standstill with our national flag flying at half-mast as radio and television stations played dirges to signify the solemn state the unwelcomed news had thrown the populace into.

John Mahama, the vice president at that time was sworn into office as the substantive president in the late hours of the day in the parliament.

A state funeral was put together a month later and the man many described as ‘Man of Peace’ was laid to rest at the Asomdww Park in Accra amidst sullen faces and genuine display of broken-heartedness all Ghanaians and concerned Africans and diplomats.

Consequentially, on this day every year, a ceremony is staged particularly the NDC party to remember him as wreaths are laid to wish him a continual peaceful rest.

Earlier today, top functionaries of the NDC went to the Asomdwe Park to lay their wreaths which had the founder of the party, former President Jerry John Rawlings extend the same gesture.

After 8 years, many will say a lot of water has passed under the bridge thus the sort of urgency that will be attached to this day the state can never be the same some few years ago.

Well, we can only continue to remember him and what he did as a president to propel the development of Ghana and his contribution to the good of the citizenry.
