Early Life And Education

Born on June 14, 2002, in Cotonou, Bénin Republic, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe spent most of her childhood in Lagos, Nigeria.

Her parents hail from Kwara State and she has four siblings; two sisters named Tolulope and Jesutunmise, and two brothers named Ade and Dami.

Due to her father’s business, her family frequently relocated during her high school years, making it difficult for her to form close friendships.

Growing up in a family that had a strong passion for music, Ayra Starr’s interest in singing was largely influenced by her family.

When she was only ten years old, she joined a high school choir and started writing songs with her brother. She attended Les Cours Sonou University and obtained a BA degree in international relations and political science.

Unfortunately, during her college years, she was frequently bullied by her classmates because of her age and appearance.

To overcome these negative experiences, she turned to music for solace, listening to Nicki Minaj’s music on her way to school. Fortunately, Ayra Starr’s mother was very supportive of her musical ambitions and always encouraged her to pursue a career in singing.

Career

Ayra began her career in August 2018 as a model when she was signed to the Quove Modelling Agency in Lagos.

During her time as a model, she had the opportunity to work with top brands such as Krisari Entertainment, Mazelle Studio, Concept Magazine, and Esperanza Women’s Wear Brand.

However, Ayra’s big break in the music industry came in 2020 when Don Jazzy, a music producer and label owner, came across her profile and was impressed by her original work, “Damage,” which she had uploaded.

On January 21st, 2020, Ayra was officially announced as a signee of Don Jazzy’s Marvin Records Label, joining the ranks of other talented artists such as DNA Twins, Koredo Bello, Johnny Drille, Rema, and Crayon.

On January 22nd, 2021, Ayra Starr released her debut EP project, also titled “Ayra Starr,” under the Marvin Records label.

The EP features a total of five tracks that showcase her magnificent voice and her unique style, which blends RnB/neo-soul with Afro-pop rhythms. Upon its release, the EP quickly rose to the top of Nigeria’s iTunes and Apple Music charts.

Since its release, the EP has garnered over 15 million listens on major streaming platforms and continues to make waves in the music industry.

The music video for the EP’s popular track “Away” was even featured on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 and made OkayAfrica’s list of The 9 Best Nigerian Songs of January 2021.

Personal Life

In 2018, Ayra Starr experienced a significant loss when her father passed away, which deeply affected her as they were very close.

As a tribute to her dad, she has written and sung some songs. Currently, she lives with her mother and brother in the Mainland area of Lagos.

As of now, Ayra Starr is not dating anyone, nor is she married. Her hit song, “Away,” talks about the pain she experienced after ending her previous relationship.

In the song, she expresses how liberated she feels after moving on and finding strength. She has also revealed that she freestyled some of the verses in the song.
